This is different to “equality”, which provides a level playing field for all.
Anita Percudani is a trailblazer for women in property in Western Australia, having founded Realmark with her husband, John, over 33 years ago.
She believes her organisation truly embraces equity, and that it’s even a part of its DNA.
“It all began on the day John and I first opened our doors in April 1989 and we had two small children. It was about juggling our lives and running a business as well,” she said.
“From that experience, we learned the importance of listening to the needs of our staff, in particular in the business, what their concerns and needs were in managing both their personal and work life.
“So even in those early days we created a very bespoke opportunity for everyone on an individual basis, allowing women to come and join Realmark, and remain with us for many years.”
Anita and John Percudani’s first employee was a woman who remained I the company for 29 years, and today Realmark still boasts a workforce comprised of 66 per cent female staff.
“I’m extremely proud of this, as it shows the support for women within our industry and our business,“ she said.
“There were very few women in property in 1989 - particularly in leadership roles – so it’s always been an ambition of mine to provide a sustainable environment where women can come and work in our industry.
“We now have very successful women in sales, in leadership, as directors and as managers. It’s been a great journey for Realmark.“
Across its network of businesses, Realmark has 17 influential women in key leadership positions, including at board level and as directors across its commercial, asset and facility management, property management and strata divisions.
Franchises Realmark Coastal, North Coastal, North, Pilbara, Karratha and Dunsborough all have female owners or part-owners.
“There’s been a rewarding flow on effect from the bespoke approach we take at the Realmark headquarters, into other offices. As a result, we see fantastic longevity from female staff which is so important to maintaining success.”
Anita Percudani featured on the panel at the Business News International Women’s Day Breakfast on Wednesday.
Realmark headquarters celebrated the occasion with an all-staff morning tea, with Associate Director of Property Management Emma Thorpe and Director of Facilities Management Laura Morse providing insight to their experience in the industry.
